Exploring Iceland’s Golden Circle

As Iceland is becoming a popular stopover for travel between the US and the UK, it’s easy to see why you’d want to visit. Covered in natural beauty, this country is a must-see anytime of year. Visit in summer months to make the most of the midnight sun with endless hours to explore, visit in winter and you get the amazing Northern Lights!

Only have a few days to spend in Iceland? No worries, the Golden Circle Tour can give you a great overview of Icelandic ponies, heaps of waterfalls, and geothermal wonders! Take a look at what you can achieve in a day or two.

Stop 1: Reykjavik

The starter for any trip, Reykjavik is Iceland’s beautiful capital, easily explored in a day and enjoyed by many for it’s statues, street art, and bizarre food (Puffin for example). Book in a bathe at the blue lagoon, most popular on winter nights when the night sky gets lit up in the purple and green hues of the Aurora Borealis.

Stop 2: Þingvellir National Park

Your first waterfall to tick off the list, Þingvellir is also home to a great diving spot between two tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia. Fancy an ice-cold snorkel or diving session between a fissure? Then it’s definitely for you!

Stop 3: Haukadalur Geysers

A great stop to explore some of Iceland’s geothermal activity, you can watch boiling hot water and mud bubble from the ground, see stunning colours produced by the mineral deposits, and enjoy the explosions of the Strokkur Geyser once it builds enough pressure every 10 minutes.

Stop 4: Gullfoss Waterfall

Waterfalls are a huge part of Icelandic tourism - but this one is like no other! Dropping 140 cubic metres of water down two tiers before ending in a crevice 32 metres deep, it creates lingering mist and frequent rainbows. A winter trip to Gullfoss is essential as you can witness the power of the water breaking the heavy deposits of snow and ice.

Stop 5: Kerið Crater Lake

You’ll already be mesmerised by the stunning colours of Iceland, but top it off with a walk around a crater to witness red volcanic rocks meet with bright blue lake water below. At 3,000 years old amazingly this is one of the youngest volcanoes in the area.

Have a bit more time to explore? Here’s our top suggestions for the remainder of Iceland:

  • Visit Hof’s grass covered church.
  • Walk to the Sólheimasandur DC3 plane wreck.
  • Take a day to be amazed by the Jökulsárlón ice lagoon and explore an ice cave by 4WD.
  • Add another waterfall to your list by visiting Skógafoss, famous for the access to walk behind it.
  • Head to Grjótagjá and see the famous cave and pools from Game of Thrones.
